Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Synopsis:
Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

First: Oh my goodness... that cover! Wow... Book-gasm!

Shatter Me is a good start to what I hope will be a good series. I don't think it is AS fantastic as all they hype, but it is a must read if you are into the distopian/love plot. Very character driven with some very unique and beautiful writing. Side note: I listened to this as an Audiobook and it was a very pleasant experience. Sometime audiobooks can be a real miss but this one was dead on.

~Spoiler Free Review~

Writing: I would say this is the category in which this book excels! Tahereh Mafi has really displayed a beautiful writing style here that is really breathtaking. It’s has a very poetic elegance and Mafi’s metaphors are wonderful. I would pick up more of her work in the future (especially if she writes something more adult) mainly because I think she has the potential to not just be an author. I see her evolving into an artist of words. Love.

World: This is the category where the book is lacking… there is very little world building which is a shame. Don’t get me wrong, I love good strong characters that don’t need world building but when those characters are combined with a well described backdrop and foundation THAT is where real magic is made. There is literally no world building in this book, mostly because the main character has seen so little of this world. I’m hoping this changes as this series unfolds.

Characters: I’m torn here. Now don’t kill me, but I’m not a fan of Juliet. I don’t hate her, but I’m just not AS in love with here as I feel so many people are. I don’t think she’s bad by any means, I just find her to be a tad of a pushover. That being said, I really enjoyed her raw thoughts, she’s very intriguing.  Juliet does needs to develop more for me though I think. Adam, meh. I’m neither here nor there. Warner? I’m intrigued. I’m really excited to see what roles these characters grow into. At this point I don’t really get the whole Team Adam vs Team Warner. I’m just team c’mon-Mafi-don’t-let-me-down right now.

Plot: I really loved the beginning. It was mysterious and raw. The whole middle section was alright and fast paced and then that ending! I love me a good love story but as I’ve said before, not a huge fan of insta-love. This book wasn’t as bad as some but it is still mildly present.

Overall, this book was decent but I’m really more excited to get further into this series. I think that Mafi has a good start to what could potentially be a fantastic series. She’s got most of the foundation started but I would like to see more world building in the books to come. If you enjoy the YA/dystopian/romance genre then you will probably enjoy this. For me, Shatter Me is more of a 3.5 but I will round up because of the high hopes I have to come.

“I spent my life folded between the pages of books.
In the absence of human relationships I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories threaded in history; I experienced adolescence by association. My world is one interwoven web of words, stringing limb to limb, bone to sinew, thoughts and images all together. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.”

Thursday Tag - Ultimate Book Tag!

Tag Time! This was originally created by the ladies at Chapter Chicks. If you do this tag please leave your link in the comment below so I can visit and read your answers and get to know you more too! So, let's get started, The Ultimate Book Tag:
1. Do you get sick while reading in the car?
Not usually however if I am in the car I am probably listening to an Audible book.

2. Which author’s writing style is completely unique to you and why?
I'm on a Patrick Ness kick lately, love his creativity... nothing like it.

3. Harry Potter Series or the Twilight Saga? Give 3 points to defend your answer.
For real?! Harry Potter hands down:
Best story ever about amazing friendships
Made me feel every humanly emotion possible
     Magical Boarding School, period.

4. Do you carry a book bag? If so, what is it in (besides books…)?
No book bag anymore, my university days are behind me, thank goodness! My purses vary but no matter what the bag, it has to fit my kindle!

5. Do you smell your books?
Brand new books? My old classics? Never...

 6. Books with or without little illustrations?
Either or, doesn't matter to me. I read books no matter what form they come in.

7. What book did you love while reading but discovered later it wasn’t quality writing?
Character driven books. There are so many books that have zero plot and surrounds just a couple characters and I used to think those worked. Now I am so much more about beautiful visualizations and world building.

8. Do you have any funny stories involving books from your childhood? Please share!
As a child, whenever I saw a train sitting idle, I would seriously consider hopping on it and wait for it to take me away so I could be a boxcar child...

9. What is the thinnest book on your shelf?
Mind Games by Kiersten White
Hardcover, 237 pages

10. What is the thickest book on your shelf?
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
Paperback, 15th Anniversary Edition, 870 pages

11. Do you write as well as read? Do you see yourself in the future as being an author?
Maybe someday, but no time as of now. Just a journal full of plot ideas.

12. When did you get into reading?
Hard to say. My mother always read to me growing up so since I can remember I have loved books. I think the first books I REALLY remember:
     Matilda by Roald Dahl
     Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

13. What is your favorite classic book?
Gone with the Wind without a doubt...

14. In school was your best subject Language Arts/English?
I wasn't bad at it, but (surprise) I'm a Chemist & Engineer so my best subject was definitely the sciences!

15. If you were given a book as a present that you had read before and hated…what would you do?
Take it graciously and then exchange it or donate it to someone I know will enjoy it.

16. What is a lesser known series that you know of that is similar to Harry Potter or the Hunger Games?
I really enjoyed the Hex Hall series by Rachel Hawkins. This is similar to Harry Potter but it's pretty sweet coming from a girl lead.

17. What is a bad habit you always do (besides rambling) while blogging?
Misspelling... thank God for spell check! Sometimes I get so excited and I can't type as fast as my mind is working so spell check is a necessity for blogging!!!

18. What is your favorite word?
     Elixir.
     Demur.
     Sumptuous.
     Touché.

19. Are you a nerd, dork, or dweeb? Or all of the above?
Self proclaimed Nerd (or geek).

20. Vampires or Fairies? Why?
Vampires, I like the dark mystery.

21. Shapeshifters or Angels? Why?
Um... haven't read too much of either, but I think I would enjoy Angels more.

22. Spirits or Werewolves? Why?
Werewolves, I feel that books around Spirits are spookier and I don't do scary...

23. Zombies or Vampires?
Zombies since I've already saved the Vampires with question 20.

 24. Love Triangle or Forbidden Love?
Neither...
Forbidden love out of the two, there are TOO MANY love triangles in the world already.

25. AND FINALLY: Full on romance books or action-packed with a few love scenes mixed in?
Action packed any day!!!

Hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about me!

If Only by A.J. Pine

Synopsis:
Sometimes it takes crossing an ocean to figure out where you belong.

It's been two years since twenty-year-old Jordan had a boyfriend—which means it's been forever since she, well, you know. But now she’s off to spend her junior year in Aberdeen, Scotland, the perfect place to stop waiting for Mr. Right and just enjoy Mr. Right Now.

Sexy, sweet (and possible player) Griffin may be her perfect, no-strings-attached match. He’s fun, gorgeous, and makes her laugh. So why can’t she stop thinking about Noah who, minutes after being trapped together outside the train’s loo, kisses Jordan like she’s never been kissed before? Never mind his impossible blue eyes, his weathered, annotated copy of The Great Gatsby (total English-major porn)…oh, and his girlfriend.

Jordan knows everything this year has an expiration date. Aberdeen is supposed to be about fun rather than waiting for life to happen. But E. M. Forster, Shakespeare, and mistletoe on Valentine’s Day make her reconsider what love is and how far she’s willing to go for the right guy.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hmmm... If Only was extremely frustrating for me. Not a fan and I don't know if I will ever pick up another A.J. Pine book. It wasn't terrible however there were major parts of the story I just couldn't get over.
~Spoiler Free Review~

Writing: I struggled here. I never was able to really emerge myself into Pine's writing style. It seemed to be a very juvenile style which would be fine if it were a Yound Adult, but this would definitely be a New Adult classification. Just wasn't feeling it...

World: There is literally no world building here besides a dorm room with paper thin walls, a school with classrooms (go figure), and a bar. Period.

Characters: The majority of this book is character driven, which is great except when you don't like the characters. I hate to be hard on a book but I think all three main characters would go in my Most-Hated-Book-Characters-of-All-Time. Jordan was weak and codependent. The only thing I liked about Griffin was that he was from Minnesota (REPRESENT). And don't get me started on Noah, gag...

Plot: Girl goes abroad. Girl meets boy, girl meets another boy, queue insta-love now, and BOOM! S*** hits the fan because of sheer stupidity and lack of communication, which goes on for the entire book.

Overall, should probably be a one star book but I only give those to books I don't finish. WHICH would have been the case for this book if I wasn't dead set on reviewing the ARC I received. I personally wouldn't recommend this book but if you are someone who loves a girl with weaknesses for stupid boys in far away lands then you will LOVE this. No, for real, don't let me discourage you if this sounds like something you would like as it has a pretty high rating thus far.
It was okay?

Plus One by Elizabeth Fama

Synopsis:
Divided by day and night and on the run from authorities, star-crossed young lovers unearth a sinister conspiracy in this compelling romantic thriller.

Seventeen-year-old Soleil Le Coeur is a Smudge—a night dweller prohibited by law from going out during the day. When she fakes an injury in order to get access to and kidnap her newborn niece—a day dweller, or Ray—she sets in motion a fast-paced adventure that will bring her into conflict with the powerful lawmakers who order her world, and draw her together with the boy she was destined to fall in love with, but who is also a Ray.

Set in a vivid alternate reality and peopled with complex, deeply human characters on both sides of the day-night divide, Plus One is a brilliantly imagined drama of individual liberty and civil rights, and a fast-paced romantic adventure story.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was alright. Honestly, I’m left a bit confused. I was expecting to feel so much more. There was so much potential here and unfortunately none of it turned into anything significant. I turned the last page and found myself just staring at the wall thinking, “Hmm… alriiiiiiight… Next book!”

I have mixed feelings about this book and I’m really on the fence.

~Spoiler Free Review~

Writing: Meh. Elizabeth Fama by no means did a bad job, but I don’t feel she did a great job either. I will say that I appreciated the speed of the book. There is nothing worse than a book that drags on and this book moved from one thing to the next very quickly. One thing I noticed that bothered me however was that Fama could get a little repetitive. Example: she described things as “just like in the movies” multiple times. This is not descriptive enough for me as a reader.

Great writing for me is when I am so enthralled by a book that I will pick up anything that author writes and follow their work religiously, not the case yet for Fama. That being said, I am curious enough to maybe pick up some of her work as she develops as an author with time. I REALLY do believe this book had some genius ideas just not the know-how to properly execute the supporting information.

World: I’m not sure what was accomplish here. The book has a distinctive dystopian vibe to it however it’s supposed to an alternate course in history to a modern Chicago after a flu pandemic? This just didn’t compute properly across the pages for me. It seemed kind of random and not very well thought out. Maybe? I don’t know…

Characters: Soleil is a very impulsive and sassy individual. I think she could have been better developed but she did her part. Not a memorable character for me though. Honestly, I liked her attitude but found her to be a little dense or nonsensical. D’Arcy was, meh. He was weak and not desirable at all in the beginning and then he became acceptable towards the end. He was neither here nor there for me. Not a fan of their romance really as it felt like it was just kind of thrown in. The romance did nothing for me.

Plot: The quality of the plot is really where I think the book struggled most, which really, isn’t this the most important part of a story? There is a dystopian tone that was mediocre. There is a forbidden love that didn’t feel so forbidden. There is a kidnapping that was really poorly executed. There is a heart wrenching family past that unfolds but didn’t wrench at my heart. I will say though that it did have a fast pace and was not too predictable.

Overall...

(Sigh)

I am really struggling here. This is not a bad book and I feel like I’m being very hard on it but I was just expecting so much more. There is something missing here, I didn’t FEEL anything while reading this book. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it but I wouldn’t go out of my way to NOT recommend it either. If the synopsis sounds interesting to you then I say give it a try! Probably along the 2.5 star range for me but I was feeling generous (mainly because I love the cover) so I rounded up.

“You don’t need to 'matter' in the world, because you already matter to the only person who counts.”

I liked it, kind of...
