Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Synopsis

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

I liked this book. I personal like Cinder more but this was still a good book and I am very excited to hop into Cress soon.

~Spoiler Free Review~

Writing: Marissa Meyers writing style throughout the Lunar chronicles so far is very juvenile? I don’t mean that in a bad way, but these are very easy reads. I flew Scarlet in one day flat. Scarlet, like Cinder, is read in a dual Point of view with the occasional third/fourth party. Never in the story does Meyers writing get overly descriptive which is both good and bad. At times I am left wanting a little more but I would rather of that then the overly expressive drawn out alternative.  I find that Meyer gives me enough to just make out the basics with my imagination but not much more beyond that.

World: Adequate. I think more could be done with the post-apocalyptic world and is an amazing foundation for a fantastic story and author’s imagination to take hold of. There should be history and descriptive surroundings. We as readers should feel like we know what this future world looks and feels like. I don’t find anything wrong with the world building per say, it just does the job. Nothing more, nothing less.

Characters
Cinder, yes!
Kai, he’s lost me a bit.
Scarlet, meh…
Wolf, has potential.
Captain Thorne, LOVE!

Plot: Scarlet is fast passed, as was Cinder, and is another plot with a strong female, feisty character. Scarlet however was a bit more predictable for me. One of the reasons I loved Cinder so much was because it did followed Cinderella but on the other hand was completely different!  Scarlet was a little too true to the original story that I wasn’t able to be immersed by a new story. I felt like I was just re-reading a story I’ve known for years. Not that it wasn’t a good story it was just one I knew all too well. I found that the parts of the book I enjoyed the most were not a part of Scarlet’s story at all. In fact I was most drawn in when Cinder came back to the page. Point blank: Cinder (book 1) had more suspense, Scarlet (book 2) had zilch.

The ONE THING that did irked me was how dense everyone is to Princess Selene’s identity.
C’mon people…

Overall: I want to stress that this is indeed a good book. Personal preference though, I liked Cinder more. I am hoping that Cress will pick it back up for me.

I really liked it.

  1. I also liked Cinder more! I just finished reading Cress and it was a good book but Cinder was still my favorite! If you like Captain Thorne then you'll enjoy Cress because he's a main character in the book. I also loved The Goddess Test series and I just ordered Alice in Zombieland. Cute blog!!
